🦅 Hutovo Blato

Hutovo Blato is one of the most important wetland nature reserves in Europe, located in southern Bosnia and Herzegovina in the lower Neretva basin. This vast system of lakes, channels, and marshes is fed by underground karst springs and by waters flowing from the Neretva river system, creating a rich and complex aquatic landscape.

💧 A Karst Wetland

Unlike typical river floodplains, Hutovo Blato is largely fed by underground water sources typical of the karst geology of Herzegovina. The water emerges cold and clear from beneath the limestone, filling a network of permanent lakes and seasonal marshes.

The reserve covers around 7,411 hectares, making it one of the largest wetland areas in the western Balkans.

🦩 Bird Paradise

Hutovo Blato is internationally recognized as an exceptional habitat for birds. It lies along major migratory routes connecting Europe with Africa, and serves as a wintering and nesting ground for hundreds of species, including herons, egrets, cormorants, ducks, and the rare Dalmatian pelican.

Birdwatching is one of the main reasons visitors come here, particularly in autumn and winter when migratory species are most numerous.

🐟 Fish and Aquatic Life

The waters of Hutovo Blato are rich in fish, including eels, carp, and endemic species. Fishing has been practiced here for centuries and remains part of the local culture and economy.

The reserve also shelters amphibians, reptiles, and a wide variety of aquatic plants that thrive in its clean, stable waters.

🚣 Visiting the Reserve

The reserve can be explored by boat along its channels and lakes, offering a slow and peaceful way to experience the wetland landscape. Visitor facilities are available at Karaotok, the main entry point.

The best seasons to visit are autumn and early spring, when the water levels are high and birdlife is most abundant.
